Review & Description
Engaging, surprising and filled with practical and often counterintuitive advice, these ten essays will change the way you think about technological progress and business innovation. Nicholas Carr, the former executive editor of the Harvard Business Review and the Pulitzer Prize-nominated author of THE SHALLOWS and THE BIG SWITCH, examines recent business and social phenomena, from the success of Apple to the rise of crowdsourcing, from the innovation strategy of Google to the disruptions of digital media, and ties them to illuminating historical precedents and economic laws. Not only will you enjoy the witty, lucid writing of this collection, but you'll come away from it with a fresh new perspective on innovation in the information age. The essays include "Let a Half-Dozen Flowers Bloom" (on the essential but underrated role that discipline plays in innovation), "Launchings and Landings" (on the dangers of out-innovating your customers), "Building Bridges" (on the most powerful way to take advantage of disruptive technologies), "The Dreams of Suits" (on the important role that bean-counters can play in creativity), "Disruption from Above" (on a new twist in the Clayton Christensen model of disruptive innovation), "With Complements" (on the essential role played by complements strategy in business success), "The Weakest Link" (on the best place to focus innovation efforts), "The Google Enigma" (on the dangers of using the search giant as an innovation model), "The Wizard and the Crowd" (on the limitations of crowdsourcing and the continued importance of talented individuals), and "The Sixth Force" (on how to think strategically about corporate responsibility).
Praise for Nicholas Carr:
"[Carr] is one of the most insightful thinkers about technology's impact on the world." -Chris Anderson, Wired

Review & Description
"This is not a book about charismatic visionary leaders. It is not about visionary product concepts or visionary products or visionary market insights. Nor is it about just having a corporate vision. This is a book about something far more important, enduring, and substantial. This is a book about visionary companies." So write Jim Collins and Jerry Porras in this groundbreaking book that shatters myths, provides new insights, and gives practical guidance to those who would like to build landmark companies that stand the test of time.
Drawing upon a six-year research project at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, Collins and Porras took eighteen truly exceptional and long-lasting companies -- they have an average age of nearly one hundred years and have outperformed the general stock market by a factor of fifteen since 1926 -- and studied each company in direct comparison to one of its top competitors. They examined the companies from their very beginnings to the present day -- as start-ups, as midsize companies, and as large corporations. Throughout, the authors asked: "What makes the truly exceptional companies different from other companies?"
What separates General Electric, 3M, Merck, Wal-Mart, Hewlett-Packard, Walt Disney, and Philip Morris from their rivals? How, for example, did Procter & Gamble, which began life substantially behind rival Colgate, eventually prevail as the premier institution in its industry? How was Motorola able to move from a humble battery repair business into integrated circuits and cellular communications, while Zenith never became dominant in anything other than TVs? How did Boeing unseat McDonnell Douglas as the world's best commercial aircraft company -- what did Boeing have that McDonnell Douglas lacked?
By answering such questions, Collins and Porras go beyond the incessant barrage of management buzzwords and fads of the day to discover timeless qualities that have consistently distinguished out-standing companies. They also provide inspiration to all executives and entrepreneurs by destroying the false but widely accepted idea that only charismatic visionary leaders can build visionary companies.
Filled with hundreds of specific examples and organized into a coherent framework of practical concepts that can be applied by managers and entrepreneurs at all levels, Built to Last provides a master blueprint for building organizations that will prosper long into the twenty-first century and beyond.

Review & Description
Permission is a playful book with serious intent. In a series of light-hearted short sections, integrated with lively graphics, this book guides all who believe in the value of creativity, fresh ideas and learning how to give themselves and others permission to go beyond lip-service to actual service. Permission is filled with examples and ideas for giving (and, in turn, getting and taking) permission. It is a simple, clear, and delightful take on the serious subject of innovation, learning and engagement. It is playful because it opens up more space for people to play with possibilities, play new roles and experience more play in the system(s) in which they work. It is serious because when people have permission to innovate, learn and engage significant business results follow. You will discover new ways to: — Energize your team — Generate more ideas — Improve employee engagement — Have more fun at work — Create space for acceptance and inclusion Most individuals and organizations espouse wonderful ideals. They advocate for innovation, questioning old assumptions, change, flexibility, responsiveness, empowerment, engagement and leadership. Making these ideals a reality is something else entirely. In author Pamela Meyer’s research on innovative organizations and the space people create for innovating, learning and changing she made a new discovery: While people understand the espoused values of innovation, learning and change, those that actually change, innovate and learn each day do so because they get, take, and most important—give permission. The permission-giver is one of the most important roles anyone can play to encourage innovative thinking, significant learning and engagement at work. Read this book to learn how you and your friends, colleagues and collaborators can generate more ideas, be more of yourself, and have more fun at work! Read more

Review & Description
FOR USE IN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ONLY. Wesley's garden produces a crop of huge, strange plants which provide him with clothing, shelter, food, and drink, thus helping him create his own civilization and changing his life. What do the children you know usually do when school is out for the summer? Go crazy with boredom? Head poolside with friends? Plan a self-sufficient civilization with its own staple food crop? That is precisely how Wesley decides to spend his summer vacation. Wesley is not an ordinary boy: "He alone in his town disliked pizza and soda, alarming his mother and the school nurse. He found professional football stupid. He'd refused to shave half his head, the hairstyle worn by all the other boys, despite his father's bribe of five dollars." It all starts (the civilization, that is) when Wesley overturns a plot of ground in his yard to see what new and unknown seeds might blow into it. Curiously, just one kind of plant grows--an unusual, flowering, fruit-bearing plant that tastes of "peach, strawberry, pumpkin pie, and flavors he had no name for." Soon, Wesley is literally reaping the fruits of his labors--using the fruit rind to make a cup for the juice he squeezes, barbecuing the root tubers, and weaving the bark into a hat to keep off the sun.
In Wesley's new world, he no longer needs a watch because he uses a flower stalk as a sundial, dividing the day into 8 segments, one for each of the flower's petals. A new language (based on an 80-letter alphabet) and counting system (based on the number 8) soon follow. Ah, Weslandia. Slowly but surely his once-tormenting classmates become curious. And soon enough, Wesley allows them to help him crush seeds for oil, which "had a tangy scent and served him both as suntan lotion and mosquito repellent." He also invents sports that are less distasteful to him than football--"games rich with strategy and complex scoring systems," and watches patiently as his classmates blunder. Wesley's parents say that he looks happy for the first time in years. And when he returns to school in September? "He had no shortage of friends." Newbery Medal winner and onetime alternate-world creator Paul Fleischman shines in this deadpan-but-hilarious picture book, and illustrator Kevin Hawkes's splendid paintings will delight young readers with the explosion of colorful, comical details. Kids young and old will love the once-outcast hero Wesley and his Robinson Crusoe-style triumphs. (Ages 8 to 11, or for reading aloud to younger children) --Karin Snelson Read more

Review & Description
What does Jesus mean when he promises 'life to the full'? Like many Christians, author Dave Gibbons thought 'life to the full' meant just the positives -- a life full of joy and happiness. After all, isn't that what we're taught in seminars, in self-help books, and even in psychological assessments to ascertain who is -- and is not -- a 'good fit'? We look for people with lots of successes and strengths, don't we? Gibbons' own beliefs on the subject were rocked when he took a long, hard, honest look at his own life and realized it was his failures that made him who is today. So he went back to the Scriptures, and kept his eyes open to truly see the people around him. That's when he made a shocking discovery: when we embrace the painful areas of our lives we see the miracle that can happen when God redeems these areas of weakness and makes them beautiful. 'Now I see that 'life to the full' means a life that is open to all the colors and flavors of the human experience, the ability to feel with a fully alive heart, whether it's in times of joy or pain.' Xealots offers a refreshing new look at what it means to be fully human. This uplifting book enables you to transform your own 'failures' into success in God's eyes so that you can serve him with all that you are. Read more

The Rare Find: Spotting Exceptional Talent Before Everyone Else (Hardcover)

First tagged by George Anders
Customer tags: creativity, leadership, hiring, innovation, motivation, talent, recruiting
Review & Description
One of the nation's biggest music labels briefly signed Taylor Swift to a contract but let her go because she didn't seem worth more than $15,000 a year. At least four book publishers passed on the first Harry Potter novel rather than pay J. K. Rowling a $5,000 advance. And the same pattern happens in nearly every business.
Anyone who recruits talent faces the same basic challenge, whether we work for a big company, a new start-up, a Hollywood studio, a hospital, or the Green Berets. We all wonder how to tell the really outstanding prospects from the ones who look great on paper but then fail on the job. Or, equally important, how to spot the ones who don't look so good on paper but might still deliver extraordinary performance.
Over the past few decades, technology has made recruiting in all fields vastly more sophisticated. Gut instincts have yielded to benchmarks. If we want elaborate dossiers on candidates, we can gather facts (and video) by the gigabyte. And yet the results are just as spotty as they were in the age of the rotary phone.
George Anders sought out the world's savviest talent judges to see what they do differently from the rest of us. He reveals how the U.S. Army finds soldiers with the character to be in Special Forces without asking them to fire a single bullet. He takes us to an elite basketball tournament in South Carolina, where the best scouts watch the game in a radically different way from the casual fan. He talks to researchers who are reinventing the process of hiring Fortune 500 CEOs.
Drawing on the best advice of these and other talent masters, Anders reveals powerful ideas you can apply to your own hiring. For instance:
* Don't ignore "the jagged résumé"-people whose background appears to teeter on the edge between success and failure. Such people can do spectacular work in the right settings, where their strengths dramatically outweigh their flaws.
* Look extra hard for "talent that whispers"- the obscure, out-of-the- way candidates who most scouting systems overlook.
* Be careful with "talent that shouts"-the spectacular but brash candidates who might have trouble with loyalty, motivation, and team spirit.
Each field that Anders explores has its own lingo, customs, and history. But the specific stories fit together into a bigger mosaic. In any field, there's an art to clearing away the clutter and focusing on what matters most. It's not necessarily hard, but it requires the courage to take a different approach in pursuit of the rare find.

Review & Description
We thirst for purpose, clarity, fulfillment and direction in our lives. How do we go about sorting through all the self-help books, talks and seminars? The common, normal solutions to navigating life are focused on strengths, gifts, and passion. The reality is quite contrarian to what seems to make sense. The revelations is found in the divine fingerprints of all that we are: our life story, what energized and de-energizes us, our rhythms, and even our pain and weaknesses. It's a different way of approaching clarity of life.At the heart of this book is the understanding that a life filled with passion is radically different than what many of us have been taught. Often it's not in the how do we find life but a commitment to a passionate pursuit. Neurologically, if we ask the question how our brains can't tap the new domains, our brains resorts to typical default solutions that are often inadequate. The way to live life to its fullest is found in abnormal rhythms and principles, that have the tension of questions more than answers. It's a place where strategy is important but an ethos where relationships trump vision. The way we are invited to live life to its fullest is found with a contrarian set of beliefs, values and questions. It's not about quick fixes and simplistic 'solutions.'.God works through our weaknesses and our failures. Real vision is found through relationships with God and with other people. Obedience is better than passion. These contrarian concepts have been presented and tested in many business and non-profit settings, including Willow Creek's Leadership Summit where Dave gave a keynote address. The tone of this book was established as Dave thought about what he would want to share with his four third culture children and future leaders. It was Dave's heart that they would walk a life where they experienced life to it's fullest, exploring the new and old domains of world that is constantly changing. We thirst for purpose, clarity, fulfillment and direction in our lives. How do we go about sorting through all the self-help books, talks and seminars? The common, normal solutions to navigating life are focused on strengths, gifts, and passion. Read more

Review & Description
What is the difference between choking and panicking? Why are there dozens of varieties of mustard-but only one variety of ketchup? What do football players teach us about how to hire teachers? What does hair dye tell us about the history of the 20th century?
In the past decade, Malcolm Gladwell has written three books that have radically changed how we understand our world and ourselves: The Tipping Point; Blink; and Outliers. Now, in What the Dog Saw, he brings together, for the first time, the best of his writing from The New Yorker over the same period.
Here is the bittersweet tale of the inventor of the birth control pill, and the dazzling inventions of the pasta sauce pioneer Howard Moscowitz. Gladwell sits with Ron Popeil, the king of the American kitchen, as he sells rotisserie ovens, and divines the secrets of Cesar Millan, the "dog whisperer" who can calm savage animals with the touch of his hand. He explores intelligence tests and ethnic profiling and "hindsight bias" and why it was that everyone in Silicon Valley once tripped over themselves to hire the same college graduate.
"Good writing," Gladwell says in his preface, "does not succeed or fail on the strength of its ability to persuade. It succeeds or fails on the strength of its ability to engage you, to make you think, to give you a glimpse into someone else's head." What the Dog Saw is yet another example of the buoyant spirit and unflagging curiosity that have made Malcolm Gladwell our most brilliant investigator of the hidden extraordinary. Read more
The Other Side of Innovation: Solving the Execution Challenge (Harvard Business Review) (Kindle Edition)

Review & Description
In their first book, Ten Rules for Strategic Innovators, the authors provided a better model for executing disruptive innovation. They laid out a three-part plan for launching high-risk/high-reward innovation efforts: (1) borrow assets from the existing firms, (2) unlearn and unload certain processes and systems that do not serve the new entity, and (3) learn and build all new capabilities and skills.
In their study of the Ten Rules in action, Govindarajan and Trimble observed many other kinds of innovation that were less risky but still critical to the company's ongoing success. In case after case, senior executives expected leaders of innovation initiatives to grapple with forces of resistence, namely incentives to keep doing what the company has always done--rather than develop new competence and knowledge. But where to begin?
In this book, the authors argue that the most successful everyday innovators break down the process into six manageable steps:
1. Divide the labor
2. Assemble the dedicated team
3. Manage the partnership
4. Formalize the experiment
5. Break down the hypothesis
6. Seek the truth.
The Other Side of Innovation codifies this staged approach in a variety of contexts. It delivers a proven step-by-step guide to executing (launching, managing, and measuring) more modest but necessary innovations within large firms without disrupting their bread-and-butter business.
